What is Creativity?
It's nearly impossible to explain creativity. In the dictionary creativity is defined as the ability to make new things or think of new ideas. For some reason that definition makes creativity seem so limited when its really not.
I don't think that to be creative you have to make or think of new things. To be creative you have to use what you have and know then turn it into something different. I wonder where writers get their ideas? Maybe from all the books they read. Have you ever noticed that artists tend to go to art shows and museums? Actors say that they love watching movies. These are not coincidences; to be creative you learn from the work of others and apply your own abilities. Being exposed to creativity makes you more creative.
Creativity is something people are born with. I think everyone has creativity; the human mind is a garden and creativity is a tree. The more sunlight and water it gets, the more it grows. As a result, by a certain age, some people are more creative than others. I think the way you grow up has a lot to do with creativity. Some parents have a path set for their kids, leading them to never think for themselves, or to keep those thoughts in. Other parents are free spirits and encourage their children to be themselves, letting their creativity run wild.
The great thing about creativity is that it does not have any guidelines. There is nothing specifically needed to be creative. You just need to let the ideas come to you and trust that you know what you're doing. Then again, I'm not a very creative person, what would I know? Typing this right now, I feel as creative as a potato. But on the other hand, someone reading this may think I am the most creative mind ever. There's something else. Everyone has different perceptions of creativity. There is a saying that goes, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’ and it couldn't be more true. We all have different eyes and minds, how can there be one single explanation of creativity? There isnt.
The point i'm trying to get across is that there is no definition of creativity, well except for the one in the dictionary obviously, and its pretty hard to define it yourself. Before, I thought I knew what creativity was. Now, I have no idea. But let me tell you, I might not know what it is, or how to explain it, but I do feel like I have more of it. How could I possibly have more of something without being able to explain it with a simple sentence? I've pondered the meaning of this word for less than a week, but doing so made me think so many different things. Maybe that's what creativity is, maybe its just thinking until you have an idea that isn't complete crap. Creativity is different. Its taking a bunch of ideas and smashing them together until they make something that you think is ok.
